The Foods Proven to Be Bad for Your Brain

The human brain is without a doubt the most important organ in your body. It is very fundamental to keep your brain healthy as it controls all works in your system. It’s responsible for your intelligence, initiatives, and interpretations. When you are hurt, it’s your mind that tells  you that there is a possible danger. It’s the brain that accepts information for better understanding and it controls your emotion for interpreting a certain thing.

If your brain is in vain, all of these processes will not function well. There are many instances of an unhealthy brain and one of them is the food that you intake.

Be aware and know these seven foods that are proven to be bad for your brain:

1. High in Trans Fats

Foods like margarine, frozen pizza, and baked goods (cake, cookies, and pies) are all high in trans-fats that will wreak havoc in your brain. It’s also damaging to blood vessels and the heart. According to a study from Journal Neurology, dementia is more likely to develop in older adults who had a high level of elaidic acid (a common type of trans-fat).

Although the brain needs fats to function well, trans-fat will do more damage than good. It reduces the production of serotonin in the brain which causes depression.

2. Sugary Drinks

Beverages like soda, energy drinks, soft drinks, and fruit juice are all sugary drinks. Sugary drinks elevate glucose in the bloodstream which harms the human brain. This will defect your memory resulting in slow cognitive function. Fortunately, this damage may not be permanent. But do not compromise the health of your brain as it can affect your whole life in the long run.

3. Fried Foods

Fried foods like fried chicken or French fries are certainly pleasing in the eye and they are tasty. While you are enjoying devouring these foods, you are also compromising your brain’s health. This type of food damages cognitive functions. The oil may clog your arteries. If this happens, your brain cannot receive enough nutrients and can’t sustain a healthy brain. It will also put you at high risk of getting cholesterol and high blood pressure. Considering these oily foods as a perfect meal is a no-no.

4. Alcohol

They say a bottle of beer will solve your problem- temporarily. It’s true though. Get drunk to run away from your problems. But do you know that too much alcohol will damage your brain? Processing new information and remembering things will be very difficult if you drink too much alcohol.

Alcohol will block chemical signals between the brain (neurons) which result in intoxication such as poor memory, slurred speech, impulsive behavior, and slowed reflexes.

Don’t forget to drink moderately!

5. High in Mercury Foods

Compared to any other seafood, tuna, orange roughly, marlin, king mackerel, and tilefish are very high in mercury. On the report of Integrative Medicine, if you have a high level of mercury in your bloodstream, your cognitive function will more likely drop up to 5 percent.

Children who are under six and pregnant women should avoid these types of fish. Do not worry though; you can’t totally crash out on your list of these types of fish. Be a responsible eater. Only eat tuna or any high-level mercury fish at least twice a month to avoid brain problems.

6. Processed Foods

A person who loves eating processed foods has a high risk of acquiring diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Processed foods have higher than recommended sugar, salt, and fat. Refined carbs and sugary foods will lead to impaired memory and learning.

Even though it’s easy to prepare and works well when in a hurry, this does a lot of damage to our body. Yes, you can enjoy now, but you will certainly suffer later.

7. Red Meat

You might not know but red meat is very controversial in nutrition food history. This, being high in saturated fat, will lead to inflammation and faster decline reasoning.

Some scientists conducted research by feeding rats with high-fat and high-sugar food for eight months. The result of the study shows that the rats developed an impaired learning process and negative brain plasticity.

Imagine what will happen if you consume red meat continuously even for 2 months. Your brain will be damaged and you are more likely to develop mental illnesses including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, and anxiety.

Too much of everything is dangerous. You should always take precautionary measures. Know the food you intake. Is it healthy or is it bad for your body? How much of this food should I consume? These are some questions you should consider. Protect not only your body but more importantly your brain.
